Working Dogs |
|
Here are three amazing dogs: (L-R): Rottweiler "Serpico," trained to detect drugs, German Shepard "Leda," who finds explosives, and "Tomi," a mix of Rhodesian, Shepard, and Akita, who is trained to sniff out and find cadavers at crime scenes and disaster sites. [Home] Photo and statement used by permission. The notion that dogs on the beach is parallel to allowing dogs in restaurant as far as food consumption goes is not only short sighted but also illogical. If this would be the case, dogs would not be allowed in homes, on the sidewalks, etc. Spell dog backwards. Did you know that the mouth of dog is cleaner than that of a human? Did you know that some dogs (aka K-9s) work? Did you know that the population of transients on the beach (who litter, defecate -- without being picked up -- sleep and harass) out-number the dogs that do the same on the streets of Santa Monica. Have you ever been next to a K-9 on a drug bust -- how about looking for survivors in La Conchita during the slides -- or how about on a bomb call with a K-9 where there is the possibility of initial success or total failure. ICitizens are very happy to see law-enforcement K-9s in time of need -- and actually just walking down a street or in front of a building. When people see them traveling in the cabin on a commercial flight, they feel safer. When people see them walking the streets in a drug infested area, they applaud them. When people see them arrive at a disaster, they feel there just might be a chance to find their loved one(s). When there is a strange car left unattended for a while, people feel there is a good chance to prevent possible explosives from going off. Yes, not all K-9s work -- but all "dogs" add new dimensions to quality of life -- the elderly, the lonely, the handicapped and law enforcement. So, the next time you see a "dog" eating -- think about a purposeful existence. Most people view that the dogs are running neck and neck with mankind. By the way, these K-9s have been at number of restaurants -- for a few bomb scares and narcotics busts. But just to let you know -- they weren't hungry when offered food. |
